It’s hard to believe that this beautiful water hyacinth is commonly considered a pest! Because of its capacity for rapid growth, hyacinth has been known to lead to reduced biodiversity and altering immersed plant communities. However, innovations are being made worldwide to turn this plant into a beneficial crop, turning trash into treasure 🌸
Hyacinth can be used to make fibers for rope and baskets, or can be turned into green manure/compost! It also aids in water purification, and has been used in pretreatment systems for drinking water. It’s root structures provide a suitable environment for aerobic bacteria to thrive, which produces inorganic compounds that in turn help to feed the plants 🌱
Perhaps if we change our perspective on our relationship with these “invasive” species, we can turn poison into great medicine🌿🌸🌿
